Relocating Critical Infrastructure Without Disrupting Operations

The constraint: Long-distance logistics, technical decommissioning complexity, operational continuity, precision handling

Johnson Controls needed to relocate critical data center infrastructure from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Suwanee, Georgia, without affecting business operations. The project presented several distinct challenges that had to be solved together rather than in isolation. Logistical complexity meant sensitive IT equipment had to be safely transported across a significant distance while maintaining equipment integrity throughout transit. Technical complexity added another layer: devices needed to be carefully decommissioned, documented, transported, reinstalled, and tested without data loss or hardware damage, with no room for shortcuts at any stage of that sequence.

Operational continuity was non-negotiable — the relocation had to be executed without disrupting Johnson Controls’ critical services, meaning the move couldn’t simply pause operations for the duration of transit. And because every device and component required controlled handling throughout the move to ensure accurate reinstallation at the destination facility, precision execution had to be maintained consistently rather than only at the points considered highest-risk. Johnson Controls needed a delivery partner capable of managing a long-distance, multi-phase relocation with zero operational downtime and full device integrity from decommissioning through final reinstallation.

Our approach

A Structured Lift-and-Shift Model Built for Continuity

Infosys engaged TECEZE as its delivery partner to execute the data center relocation through a controlled, end-to-end process covering site assessment, decommissioning, logistics, installation, and testing. Both the source and destination data centers were thoroughly surveyed to assess site readiness, compatibility, and installation requirements before the relocation began, giving the team a clear picture of what each location required before any device was touched. Skilled technicians carefully decommissioned the critical devices and ensured each component was correctly catalogued and prepared for transportation, avoiding the ambiguity that can creep in when equipment moves without precise records. Specialised packaging materials and handling procedures protected the equipment during transit, with devices securely transported to the destination facility in Suwanee, Georgia over the distance from Milwaukee. Upon arrival, each device was methodically installed and tested against operational standards and SLA requirements to confirm functionality and readiness, and the relocation as a whole was managed as a structured transition, with planning and execution coordinated across the source and destination environments to minimise disruption throughout.

From challenge to transformation, the solution included:

Detailed Site Survey

Both source and destination data centers thoroughly surveyed to assess site readiness, compatibility, and installation requirements before relocation began.

Controlled Decommissioning

Skilled technicians carefully decommissioning critical devices, with each component correctly catalogued and prepared for transportation.

Secure Packaging and Logistics

Specialised packaging materials and handling procedures protecting equipment during transit, with secure transport to the Suwanee, Georgia facility.

Installation and Testing

Each device methodically installed and tested against operational standards and SLA requirements to confirm functionality and readiness.
