Relocating Critical Infrastructure Without Disrupting Operations

The constraint: Long-distance interstate transport, complex logistics, secure decommissioning, device integrity throughout the move

The project involved transporting more than 50 critical devices across a significant geographical distance between Wisconsin and Georgia. Because the infrastructure supported business operations, the relocation had to be carefully sequenced to minimise downtime and protect equipment throughout the move — a distance of this scale meant devices would be in transit and out of production for longer stretches than a local move would require, raising the stakes on getting sequencing and handling right the first time.

The programme presented several challenges, including complex logistics across state lines, safe decommissioning of devices supporting live operations, secure transportation over the distance between sites, accurate reconnection at the destination, and maintaining device integrity throughout every stage of the relocation. Any gap in coordination between decommissioning at the source and installation at the destination risked either extended downtime or damaged equipment arriving at a data center that had no room for either. The organization needed a delivery partner capable of managing a long-distance, multi-device relocation with zero unplanned disruption and full device integrity from decommissioning through final testing.

Our approach

A Structured, Phase-Based Approach to Data Center Relocation

Infosys engaged Teceze as its specialist delivery partner to execute the data center lift and shift with a focus on precision, equipment protection, and operational continuity. Thorough surveys of both the source and destination data centers established infrastructure requirements, equipment positioning, connectivity, and installation conditions before the move, giving the team a clear picture of what needed to happen at each end before any device was touched. Critical devices were then carefully decommissioned using controlled procedures to protect equipment integrity and prepare each component for secure transportation over the distance between Wisconsin and Georgia. Specialised packaging materials and handling procedures protected servers, storage systems, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and UPS systems during transit, recognizing that different device types carry different handling risks over a long-distance move. Transportation was organised in phased movements across four weekends, ensuring devices moved in a controlled sequence while minimising disruption to ongoing operations, and at the destination, Teceze teams reinstalled and tested the relocated equipment to verify connectivity, functionality, and operational readiness before each phase was considered complete.

From challenge to transformation, the solution included:

Detailed Site Survey

Thorough surveys of both source and destination data centers to understand infrastructure requirements, equipment positioning, connectivity, and installation conditions before the move.

Strategic Decommissioning

Critical devices carefully decommissioned using controlled procedures to protect equipment integrity and prepare each component for secure transportation.

Secure Packaging

Specialised packaging materials and handling procedures used to protect servers, storage systems, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and UPS systems during transit.

Coordinated Logistics

Transportation organised in phased movements across four weekends, ensuring devices were moved in a controlled sequence while minimising disruption to ongoing operations.
